Artist Inspiration: |

My Artist inspiration for this piece are Stefan Sagmeister and Felix Gonzalez-Torres.Firstly one of Stefan’s art works that I took the most inspiration from was the Banana Wall. He used the concept of using food to represent something that could deteriorate through time.My other inspiration for this piece was Felix Gonzlez-Torres,he also used the concept of food in his piece “untitled (Portrait of Ross in L.A.)’ but what also receved inspiration from was his concept of someone being able to take his art home. He creates these interesting pieces of art and lets the public take that piece of art home. One reason why I choose to do a cake was that I wanted to demonstrate something using food just like Stefan Sagmeister but also wanted to share the cake with family and friends. The art movement that also gave me inspiration to create this piece was pop art. For me in pop art I feel like something most artist do is exaggerate whether it be in their concept or/and meaning. Thats one thing I find really interesting about pop art that artist demonstrate exaggeration in color, size, concept in such amazing ways.
Planning Scketches:
Since the project was introduced to us the first concept that came to mind was the lost of childhood/Growing up. For this first sketch I drew a little girl and her future self they are thinking that are ether important to them as well as what shaped them to be who they are whether its society changing the way you see yourself, a bad moment in your life or things that you started liking. Its also is meant to show how through time our thoughts and life changes as we grow up. We are never going to stay the same and we will never view the world the same way, and honestly that what this sketch represented.

This sketch represents a similar concept as the first sketch. The difference is that this sketch is meant to represent how as we grow older we tend to look back at simple times, and start thinking of our childhood and realizing that growing up can be hard.I feel like at one point when things get hard or we can't really imagine ourselves growing older we always look back to simpler and happy times.

Process:
- Like every project I started off looking for a artist inspiration and concept that I was going to base my art upon
- I then started to do my planning sketches
- To make the cake I simply followed the instructions on the box
- When the cake was done I let it cool for about 5 min before I started decorating
- To decorate I used butter cream frosting: ( I mixed 2 sticks of butter, 4 cups of powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract.)
- I covered the Cake with buttercream frosting then I decided to add another coat of buttercream frosting
- To make the designs I generally just used black frosting and different baking tips to make my lines thin or thick
- To fill in things the things in the thought bubble I just used more butter cream frosting with some food coloring
- Last and final step was to enjoy the cake

Experimentation:

There is many things that I tried attempting to create my piece.I tried using royal icing to make the girl in a plastic wrap and then gently transfer it to the cake when it would hardent but later on I realized that I might of made the royal icing to watery and it wouldn't harden. I also decided to remake my cake so I repeated the process and change many things, honestly I really want happy with the first one and since I really never bake and decorate cakes the first cake was kinda like a practice round and I knew I would of done better and used other tools.

Reflection:
Like every art project they all aren't easy. Every art piece comes with challenges, for this piece it came with a lot of them. It's really easy to just bake a cake but when it came to decorating it it was pretty difficult. I had trouble keeping things presentable and clean since I was just placing the icing directly to the cake without an outline or anything. For this piece I wanted to represent the lost of innocence and how we all grow up but as we become older we at one point look back at or childhood and we remember the simple times in our lives. I really feel that I was successful in representing that in my piece and honestly i'm really proud of my art piece. I also feel like the connection I had with my artist inspiration was semi strong because I really feel like although the meanings of each piece is way different the concept of the art vanishing over time is there.
ACT Connection:
- Felix and Stefan's use of food really inspired me to do the same. Felix used his art to give to others and Stefan used his art to represent a concept that deteriorates through time.
- Felix Gonzalez-Torres used his art as a form as giving back, he would create his pieces for people to take hold and enjoy authentic and amazing art.
- I just feel like as people grow older they all look back at simple times in their lives and wish they were back at that point where life is just simple and not stress worthy.
- My central idea was just the lost of innocence and growing up.
- A inference I made was that everyone has their own opinion of a artist artwork it could be negative or positive. As well as realizing that an artist can really create a visual that can be a little different than their meaning.
