Exhibition Text:
This artwork was inspired by Melissa lee Johnson and one of her art works called “Tinderella”. The piece is a combination of pencil, color pencil, pen and water color similarly to my artist inspirations work. She uses a combination of different mediums some including pencil and color pencil. This piece is a representation of teenager and how they are chained to social media, for this piece as decided to concentrate on Instagram. I choose Instagram because it seems that many millennials are into sharing their life through pictures.

My artist inspiration was Melissa Lee Johnson, she is a local Milwaukee artist. I was inspired particularly by one of her art works and her style of art. Johnson is an illustrator as well as a graphic designer. She main focus in drawing and illustration but also explores different mediums. The majority of her artwork is inspired by by 21st century problems/themes. The piece created by her that inspired my piece was ‘Tinderella’. What inspired my piece was how she presented a 21st century theme which was online dating. In her piece she demonstrates comments/conception that online dating causes. She demonstrates this by using phrases and comment in her piece as well as demonstrates how someone can probably get “trapped” in the idea of online dating especially in the minds of 18-mid 20 year old due to online dating being popular among the young adults/teens. Anothing thing that also inspired my piece is the medium she used to create her piece. She created this piece using pencil and what I presume is color pencil. What is interesting about her and her work is that she uses multiple forms of medium in her pieces but she never hesitates in old school pencil, color pencils, and paper to create well defined, well detailed and complex drawings.

Planning:
For this first piece I wanted to represent how teenages these days are used to staying in their room and surround themselves with technology whether it be a phone, computer, ipad, etc. As well as demonstrate how they are addicted to their technology and i wanted to demonstrate this by having spider webs, and the person being all bones to represent an exaggeration of how much time we as teenages spend on our phone.

For this piece I wanted to base it on the quote,“ there is no light at the end of the tunnel”. I wanted to draw a person in a light bulb that demonstrates a night sky and the outside would demonstrate a clear blue sky. To represent how we as people at times find our self trapped in a dark place and don't see that their at times can be a light at the end of a tunnel/situation. This piece was going to be inspired by the pop art movement due to the exaggeration in meaning.

Process:
- I found a artist inspiration as well as found a artwork of there's that I can get inspiration from
- Then I started planning what I wanted to base my art on and how I wanted to demonstrate it
- Found a medium I wanted to create my art with and since my artist inspiration creates most of her art using pencil and color pencils, I wanted to do the same but also use sharpie in my piece to create dark yet thin lines
- I then Sketched out the drawing and passed the sharpie over the pencil
- Last step was to color the drawing and erase any leftover shown pencil
Experimentation:
What I Experimented in this piece with the watercolor to create the the color in the logo as well as the platform. I was pretty difficult to blend the colors without them turning brown. I had to carefully place the colors in a line and then when they were close to drying I carefully blended the colors. I tried it multiple time before I painted the water color on the final piece (as demonstrated below) and they came out pretty close to what I wanted to achieve but for the final piece I saw that I probably didn't let it dry enough to have it blend when and it kinda turned a bit brownish towards the end of the instagram logo.

Reflection:
This piece would have to be the first in which the medium is just pencil, pen, and color pencil based. I normally do acrylic as well as prints, but I really wanted to demonstrate a strong connection to my artist inspiration. Her work is at times mostly pencil and color pencil based work and I wanted to do the same. I feel like this piece has a strong connection to my artist inspiration because on how we both based it on a social media issues and the medium used.
For this piece I wanted to demonstrate how social media has us “chained” to our phones, primarily Instagram. I demonstrated this by having a girl sit on a high platform and having her hands chained to the platform with her phone on the side and some of her instagram posts on the back. As well as comments, hashtags and likes on the ground. This piece was also meant to demonstrate how we as millennials are so used to sharing every single moment of our lives on social media whether it be on instagram, snapchat, etc. I feel like I did a good job demonstrating this by having one of the background pictures be someone holding a cup of their coffee, this is something that is really common on social media.( Millennials showing every little detail of their life like what they eat and drink, etc)
Although I really wanted to demonstrate a strong connection to my artist inspiration I still wanted to show differences between pieces. My artist inspiration is well known for her thin pencil lines, but for my piece I really wanted to have thick and dark lines to emphasize the drawing.
I feel like this piece over all was a strong connection to my artist inspiration and the meaning in my opinion is well executed and its to the point. If I were to change anything on the piece it would be to add more pictures to have a stronger representation of instagram, and the views people have on it by adding more comment bubbles. This piece overall was really fun to create because it was interesting to see how I would create this my own but still have a strong connection to my artist inspiration which I feel like I succeeded at.

ACT Connection:
1.The effect that my artist inspiration had on my piece was the idea to focus on a social media issue/theme.
2.The overall approach was to talk about the medium my artist inspiration focuses.
3.The overall conclusion I have discovered is that many people have many viewpoints on a subject and always find clever ways to represent that subject.
4.The central idea was social media and the effect it has on one's life.
5.The overall conclusion I came up with was that no matter how overdone the theme of social media is, artist always find a clever and interesting way to demonstrate it in their work.
