Exhibition text:
This Architectural sculpture was created to display an architectural display that would be displayed in a part of lake michigan. The objective of this piece was to create a area by the lake taking in mind the space and emotions that people would feel when walking up to this piece. My artist inspiration was Richard Serra because he wanted to create emotion and incorporates the space of the location to do so. This piece is meant to create a sense of curiosity and give them a clear view of the lake.
Artist Inspiration:
My artist inspiration for this piece is Richard Serra. His work played a major role in advancing modern abstract sculpture to minimalism. People describe or interpret the material he uses and methods as a "last gasp" of abstract expressionism. His work focuses on the importance of space and how much is available and how people will be moving around the piece. His work engages the person to move in very different ways and lengths.

Planning:
Planning for this project was pretty simple, It consisted of playing around with materials until I felt like it was the best way to incorporate the space of the lake and what emotions I wanted to create. Below you can view different Ideas I had to manipulate space and emotion. I choose to create #7 because it creates a sense of curiosity and lets the view choose what path to take to view the lake. I choose to create a area that receives part of the beach and lake but yet have an area where it opens up to the rest of the lake and beach.

MIAD Questions:
1) How does your work create a relationship between land and water?:
The relationship that my piece has with land and water is creating a space were people can walk directly into the water or view it from the space itself.
2) What feelings will people have upon seeing, entering, and walking through your structure?:
The feeling that I want people to feel is curiosity and the sense of adventure. I want them to explore and feel confusion as soon as they walk in the space.
3) How does your structure relate to our world physically as well as with our mind?:
My structure relates to our mind by giving us the sense of curiosity and confusion. Its meant to give the person walking in to the space confusion on were to walk and making them think about what path they want or feel like taking.
4) How does your structure embrace the lake?:
5) How does your structure use the fundamental architectural components of:
Path: The structure of the walls give people enough space were they don't feel claustrophobic as well as gives them a option of what way to take to the water.
Portal: There are two ways to get in the space but the main way in is from the front.
Place: The structure gives you the sense of curiosity and adventure.
6) How does your structure embody meaning?:
The structure embody meaning by how the walls are places as well as how it goes towards the water.
7) Describe at least three meaningful decisions?:
a) Something that I decided to do was create the walls to co slightly into the water on one side and open on the other side making it a exit from the space. I did this because I kinda wanted to give who ever goes and wants to enjoy the water with friends and family they have their own little area for them to enjoy.
b)The meaning of the right angle walls are to create a area were people can explore and find alternative way towards the water

Process:
1)Like any other project I started off looking for a artist inspiration, I was looking for someone that incorporated space as well as emotion in their architecture.
2)I then started my planning, which consisted in cutting cardboard that will be representing the sand and cutting out cards stock that represented walls and started manipulating the space and placing the walls to where I felt it incorporated the lake well.
3)Well I finally decided which plan I wanted to proceed with I collected my material that I was going to use to create the final piece.(Wood, Exacto Knife, and Glue)
4) I then used the card stack walls as a template and drew it out on the wood
5) I then cut out the pieces (walls)
6)When the walls were all done being cut I then started gluing all the pieces together. The cardboard (Representing the sand) to the black chip board (Representing the lake),then reassuring the placement of the walls and gluing them to the cardboard.

Reflection:
This piece was a challenge to create,I have always had a interest in architecture but never really created nor looked too much into what architects go through. This project challenged me to look more in depth to what architecture really is and how architecture has a large effect on a person emotion’s. I feel like I had a strong connection to my artist inspiration when it came to me incorporating space and thinking about the emotion’s that the piece would create. The process of creating this piece was simpler than any of my other art works, the challenging part was understanding what emotion I wanted to convey. It was simple to just throw stuff on a board and say I was done but it was much more than that. I had to understand that architects like Richard Serra go through and understand that they don't just draw up planning sketches without first considering space/location, emotion that would be created, measurements, and much more. I had to understand that I needed to put myself in a architecture's shoes and consider the space which was the lake, and what emotion would be created when someone walked on the sand and saw my piece and started walking towards it, What feeling did I want them to feel as soon as they arrive to the main entrance or side entrance? I wanted them to feel curiosity and wanted them to have a area where the space felt small but the view to the lake was wide and wanted a area where it started off as a thin hallway and then to a wide hallway towards the lake. This project overall I felt like I was successful in considering my artist inspiration and incorporating his techniques and emotion to my own piece.
Act Connections:
- Richard Serra architecture conveyed emotion to who ever walked into his architecture, my goal was to do the same.
- The overall approach the other had was to inform the reader about Richard Serra's architecture as well as what inspires his work.
- I discovered that architecture has a greater affect on a person emotion as they walk in a building or just view it from outside.
- The overall idea for this piece was to create curiosity to who ever entered as well as incorporate space in my piece.
- The inference that I made while researching for this piece is that the space that a structure is in has a greater effect on the mood of a person.
