This piece is inspired by Melissa Lee Johnson and her art piece called David Byrne. This piece is a portrait of three of my close cousins, Emmanuel, Tony, and David. The name of this piece is, “Hermanos” that translates to brothers in English. I titled it Hermanos because I consider them my brothers, growing up as an only child they were the only ones that made my life less boring and if it weren't for them I wouldn't be the person I am now. The background is of one thing that reminds me of them.

I experimented in the position of my cousins in relation to the photo-taking process. I also experimented with the skin tone, being as finding a proper skin tone for my cousins was difficult. Overall, skin tone was difficult to create because it was either too dark or to light. Making the skin tone lighter was a process all in its own. The expression on my cousin’s faces was also part of my experimentation. I was debating whether to actually showcase their faces or leave them blank. I settled on leaving them blank, being as it fit more for my piece and it’s meaning.

Reflection:
This piece is a portrait of my three cousins, Emmanuel (Age 17), Tony (Age 15), and David (age 12). I decided to do a piece on them because they have a great impact on who I am as a person. I'm an only child, so having them in my life made it less boring. I sometimes think its funny when people talk about their siblings and say “wow, you're lucky you don't have annoying sibling”. But believe it or not I have those three that are just like my brothers, they annoy me and I annoy them, we fight like siblings and I know that no matter what they will always have my back and I will always have theirs. The choice of color was made by them, I asked them to pick a random color and they choose blue, purple, and red. The reason I had them choose the color was because this painting was generally for them representing them, that includes having them choose their favorite colors. The background also has a symbol of something that represent what they like doing and that always reminds me of them. For Emmanuel I choose a football because he was apart of his football team at his high school and the excitement in his face when he talked about playing is something I really won't forget, It was something that made him happy. For Tony it's a soccer ball because ever since we were little that's something we would always play. We would play for hours till it got dark outside and the best memories I have of him is seeing him play with his soccer team and just cheering for him. For David on the other hand doesn't really have anything to do with sports. For his symbol I choose a lightning bolt specifically the Flash's lightning bolt. The flash is a superhero that both me and him really like. My cousins and I are honestly neighbors and live in a duplex together so going to their house and mine is honestly 17 stairs away. The flash is a show that David, Tony and I got obsessed with since the moment I moved into the duplex. Every Tuesday when the show would come on we got together graved snacks and watched it. David is the one person that stuck around and continued watching the show and as a 12 year old he at times playing around calls himself “the Flash” which is something I find really funny. The Flash is something that will always remind me of David.
My artist inspiration was Melissa Lee Johnson, she is a Milwaukee. The art work that she created that that I based my portraits on is called David Byrne. Something that I decided to include was the repetition of the symbols just like in Johnson's artwork she used the repetition of the tear drops. She also has the person centered,to where the viewer focuses on the person, I made my cousins centered as well in my paintings to have the view see there faces first.
Overall the creation of these painting came with some complications. The complication was creating the right skin tone that would be close to the skin color of each of my cousins. It was difficult because I struggle creating skin-tone, when I would create the skin-tone it would end up to dark or to light. Over all the skin tone came out a little dark for each of my cousins something I would change if I were to recreate the skin tone would add a bit more yellow and even a bit more white to make it a bit lighter. Although I had difficulty creating the skin tone I still like how the overall piece turned out.

ACT Connection:
- The general cause effect relationship between my work and my inspiration is the use of repetition.
- The overall approach the author had regarding the artist was her inspiration as well as what she does and what inspires her work.
- The general thing I discovered about people's ideas about art is that they are becoming more open to modern meanings and concepts.
- The central theme of my work is family, Family is something that I cherish and really can't see my life without.
- The general conclusion that I took from my research what that modern art these days are focused on 21st century themes/concepts.
