"Self Portrait"

Artist Inspiration:
My inspiration for this piece was the fauvist movement. This movement was generally admired by a group of french men, that includes Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and many more. Fauvist painters generally loved this movement due to how they demonstrate and emphasize people's expressions. In this art movement artist use intense color as a way to demonstrate light as well as space. They redefined pure color as a way of emotion in their pieces. The photo on the left is by Matisse and the one on the right is a photo of a pice I found online I found insperation in the colors used, techniques as well as background.

Planning:
For this first sketch I wanted to use Van Gogh as inspiration. The background was going to be inspired by his painting the Starry night and his self portraits was going to inspire the brush technique I was going to use.
|
This sketch was also going to be inspired by Van Gogh's art work.In the back ground I was going to use a stippling technique as well as soft brush strokes to demostrate texture. The body its self was going to be inspired by the fauvist movement and its use of strong hues.

- I First had to create my canvas, I collected what I needed and stretched my canvas.
- I then had to Gesso my canvas and pray that I stretched my canvas correctly and that when the gesso got dry it wouldn't warp my canvas.
- I them proceeded to choose colors for my background and painted my canvas
- I then took pictures that I would then transfer them onto my canvas using a projector.
- I then proceeded to make different hues using acrylic paint that I would apply to my canvas
Critique:
Experimentation:
For this piece in my opinion there wasnt as much experimentation than other art works in the pass. What I generally experimented on was finding a picture I liked as well as finding the write color of paint to use.

Reflection:
Overall this was a simple project, i'm really proud of my final product. I've learned to paint on a bigger canvas and learned more about the fauvist movement and incorporated what I earned on this piece. I went out of my comfort zone a little in deciding to use a bit of bold colors but that is what makes the fauvist movement what it is, incorporating color to demonstrate emotion. I feel like I had a strong connection to the fauvist movements and the artist that made it what it was because I really feel like I incorporated some of their techniques into my piece as well as using the paint and its colors to demonstrate something. Although I did find this really simple I found myself debating what kind of colors to use, to go with warm hues or cool hues, but in a way I decided to incorporate both in random parts in my painting.
ACT Connection:
- The fauvist movement had such a big effect in my art work. Colors and techniques were implemented into my art work with the idea to let it represent what the fauvist movement was.
- The author from my research just stated facts about what the fauvist movement was and what techniques the artist used in that time.
- The conclusion I came about after I researched was the kind and shade of color I was going to add to my painting.
- The central idea around my piece was to emphasize in color as well as texture.
- Like every movement and artist I search its shocking that people can have really negative comments about the art at first and later on the movement and artist becomes well known and loved.
